The City

Before anyone knew it, humanity was an endangered species. Like a virus spreading and killing our host, we had grown into a nuisance and it was only a matter of time before the Earth’s internal defenses started fighting back. New sicknesses emerged like wildfires snuffing out lives with devastating effectiveness. The rapidity with which this new age of sickness dawned was unprecedented and completely unexpected. We thought we’d mastered sickness. That science would save us. The moon and Mars would be our new havens. Humans would stretch out across the stars and exist in perpetuity. Alas, the following are no tales of science fiction. They are the record of what happens when a world tries to heal itself by destroying the source of its injury.

One final new devastating sickness broke out in Asia and had reached the west coast of America in record time. Those touched by it were transformed into something inhuman. A new, disease spreading, killing machine was created every time an infected person got hungry. It was the perfect plague. Zombies are a myth, an old wives’ tale. These weren’t zombies, they were the infected, sick people. Everyone called them zombies anyway. It was easier than thinking up a new name as they ran for their lives.

The denizens of the city that you will come to know saw this disease reaching its black hand out and trying to envelop them. The citizens of that place made a stand. They erected a barrier to keep out the hordes created by that horrible sickness. Even before they were finished, the new disease has lashed across the country and began clawing at their front door. Quarantines were enforced. Many were killed in the final stages of building the great barrier, but those who weren’t, those who now live inside the walls, are relatively safe. At least for the moment.

Now when people look at the sky, they no longer see opportunity in the stars. They just see the black smoke and the ashes of what were once our race’s greatest achievements, humanity’s legacy gone in the blink of an eye. While hope is difficult, it is always present for those willing to search. Many no longer have that will.

This is the story of all of them. It is the tapestry of survival. Life after the end times. Life After Death.

New Shroudsburg

It was the last days of man. The plague that was undeath swept through what had been an infallible civilization. The devastation was total and undeniable. Yet, in its darkest time, humanity refused to go quietly into oblivion. Those days showed the best that we had to offer: selflessness and sacrifice, people of all creeds bonded against unimaginable odds. It was enough to bring tears to the most jaded among us. This isn’t that story.

New Shroudsburg: once the proud gateway to the big city. If asked what New Shroudsburg had meant to them, each former resident would have given a different opinion. There was no general consensus to what the city was, but perhaps that is the most accurate description. New Shroudsburg was a town that struggled for its identity. It was a young town, constantly shaped by the demands of the current climate. And even though it was a city by any definition, it was forever overshadowed by the grand metropolis that was its neighbor.
